Dr. June Knight
Dr. June Knight is the superintendent of the Southwest
Technology Center in Altus, Oklahoma. A position she assumed in July, 2001.
Southwest Oklahoma is her home, having been raised on a farm north of Granite,
Okla. in Greer county. After graduating from Granite High School in 1960,
she began a seven year civil service career with the United State Air Force
working both at Altus AFB and Clinton-Sherman AFB at Burns Flat, Okla. She
culminated her civil service career in 1970 as the acting civilian personnel
officer at Clinton-Sherman when the base closed.
In 1972, she graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State
University, Weatherford, Okla. with a bachelor of science degree in education
and a masters degree in education with an emphasis in educational administration
in 1974. She earned her doctorate of education in educational administration,
curriculum, and supervision from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla.
in 1993.
Knight began her educational career in 1972 as a teacher
at the Frances Willard Elementary School in Hobart, Okla. In 1976, she became
a remedial reading/math teacher for the fourth and fifth grades at the Eugene
Field Elementary School in Hobart. She served in this position until becoming
the school's principal in 1980. In 1985, she moved to the Hobart Middle School
as principal and in January 1988, she was selected as the superintendent of
the Hobart Public Schools.
In 1995, she accepted a position with the Oklahoma Department
of Education as a regional accreditation officer where she remained until
becoming the superintendent of schools in Granite, Okla. in 1995. In 1997,
she became an assistant professor in the College of Education at SWOSU. In
1998, she left to begin an educational consultant's business that she operated
until accepting her current position at the SWTC.
Knight has served in many professional organizations.
She is a past president and board member of the Oklahoma Association of School
Administrators; past president and member of the board of directors for the
Southwest Oklahoma School Officials; past vice-president of the Oklahoma Association
of Elementary School Principals; and former vice-president of the SWOSU Chapter
of Phi Delta Kappa. She has been a member of the Superintendents Advisory
Board to the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction since 1988
and is a member of the Oklahoma Association of Career Technology Educators
and the Technology Center Superintendents.
She is a member of the Altus Rotary Club; 2001-2002 member
of the board of directors for the Southwest Area Economic Area Economic Development
Corporation; member of Southwest Workforce Investment Board; and member of
the Southwest Workforce Development Council. She participated in the 2002
Altus AFB civic leader trip to Langley AFB, VA and Robins AFB, GA and attended
the 2002 National Security Forum at the Air War College in Maxwell AFB, GA.
She is active in numerous community events and church activities.
She and her husband, Donnie, have two children; John
Knight of Lawton, Okla. and Donna Guthrie of Georgetown, Texas, with two
grandchildren, Payton and Connor. Her mother, Charlece Cothrum, resides in
Granite, Okla.
