Program Description

Instructional Strategy

Attendance

 

Students learn lawn care and landscaping and how to repair and maintain a variety of power tools and equipment in this program.  They experience real world “hands on” learning situations in a variety of job skill areas including landscape design, lawn care, environmental technologies (the custodial wave of the future) and power product technology (small engine repair).  Equipped with the skills taught in this program, a student has the opportunity for a successful career in a highly valued occupational area. 

 

• Occupational Services is part of the Human and Social Services Career Cluster.

 

 

• 1st 9 weeks – Lawn and garden equipment usage and maintenance, lawn care and maintenance and landscaping

 

• 2nd 9 weeks – Environmental sciences, janitorial, floor care and maintenance and food safety, sanitation and building maintenance

 

• 3rd 9 weeks – Power products, small engine and equipment maintenance and repair

 

• 4th 9 weeks basic welding

 

 

High priority is placed on attendance. Reliability in the work place is the single most valued employee trait in today’s job market.

 

Student Organization

 

Students in this class have the opportunity to test their recently learned skills through various district, state and national competitions through SkillsUSA – VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Inc.).

 

Dress Code

Employment Opportunities

 

No extremely baggy or loose fitting clothing.

 

No clothing with loose straps, chains or buckles will be worn in the shop or while working outside.

 

 

U.S. Department of Labor projects the following to be among the fastest growing career fields through the year 2010:

    

Food service preparation and 

   serving workers and their

   supervisors

General maintenance and repair        

   workers

   Welders

 

Opportunities are also available in custodial and landscape/lawn care, particularly in growing communities.

ICE Agreements

 

ICE agreements give some students the opportunity to get on-the-job (OJT) training in related fields.  These agreements allow students to work and receive pay during regular class hours. 

• Part-time students may work a

   maximum of 3 days per week.

• Full-time students may attend 

   class ½ day and work OJT ½ 

   day (5 days per week).

All OJT Placements must be
