Best Writing Guide: How to Structure a Dissertation

Dissertation is requirement of doctorate students to tackle a research problem and do in depth study of it and provide insight to the topic. Dissertation is not only an academic piece of writing but it is the effort of the person who is responsible for conducting research. It is a chance to make yourself renown in world of academics. It shows that your findings are important to be implemented in the society. The structure of dissertation is as follows with the guide what to write in it.

1. Title page

The first of thesis is title page which consist of following points:

  • Name of your supervisor, degree and department

2. Acknowledgement page

This the page where you thank to all those people who have helped in your dissertation journey. Students often got confused about who they can mention in this page, which can be as follows:

  • Head of Department

3. Abstract

This is the most important section where you summarize knowledge background of your topic, methodology of conducting the research, results and then conclusion. It should be to the point and not more than 200 or 250 words.

4. Table of content

You can add automatic table from MS word. It consists of following things:

  • Headings and subheadings of the thesis along with page number
  • List of figures
  • List of tables

5. Introduction

This is where the first chapter of dissertation starts in which you need to shed light on the topic. What this topic is about? Why it is important to discuss about it? And how it play important role in mechanism? Moreover, convince your reader that the topic has vast applications and hold significant value in the society. State your questions related to the topic and develop hypothesis. Literature review is often mixed with introduction part so for writing that you need to read articles and books and cite them properly.

6. Methodology

It is second chapter and explains how the study is conducted by use of tools, techniques, software. Elaborate which parameters you have selected for the study and state reasons of it. You need to conduct experiment to check the testability of the hypothesis whether it is true or not. Also, details are necessary so that the method can be replicate.

7. Results

Interpret your outcomes in this section and explain it via charts, graphs, and diagrams. Describe whether it is according to the prediction or not. Use numerical and statistical language to clearly explain your results.

8. Discussion

Discussion is the section where you corroborate with your research findings and establish connection with your hypothesis. The findings do not always in favor of hypothesis but it can against it or conflict with it. Mention limitation in study to show its reality at ground level.

9. Conclusion

Write good and strong conclusion of your dissertation in which you summarize your topic, results, and its importance. Explain how outcomes of the research can open door for future opportunities.

10. References

This is where you put your citation in any reference style recommended by your respective departments. Normally APA style is used but you can check the requirement.

11. Appendices

You can attach additional documents that are necessary for dissertation. It can be interview, tables, files, survey, figures, and etc.
